Family on Film 2024

THIS SERIES IS ABOUT FAMILY — BOTH CHOSEN AND BLOOD. IT CONTINUES TO GROW.

My father came to visit my wife and I in 2024. We took him to my best friends house, whose mother has also become my own. She made us a beautiful Belgian dinner whilst my dad played the main character by telling everyone his entire life story.

We visited Bristol, where my wife’s parents live, drank Jamaican rum, ate fish and chips and chatted shit.

My father carried around different options for hats, scarves and glasses with him during the trip. This being his first time in the city, he wanted to make sure the aesthetic were just right. His favorite being the Meta glasses with all of its fancy functions. The amount of times I heard him say “Meta, take a photo” is crazy! But we lowkey loved it.

These candid family photos serve not only as a time capsule for my families legacy but also as a well fought for representation of acceptance, love and care for my wife and I’d queer relationship within the black diaspora. Our elders fumbled over pronouns and boundaries but caught themselves and showed us the same respect and grace we gave them.

We expect love to win, but it doesn’t always. When it does win, it often starts here, in our homes.
